ABSTRACT

Operation of the centrifugal pump a high velocity is imparted to the water as it enters the pump, and that velocity is converted to pressure as the water exits the pump. Submersible pumps are vertical, close-coupled heavy duty centrifugal pumps designed to work submerged in the water they are pumping. The interrelations of pump head, flow, efficiency and horsepower are the Characteristics of the Pump. These are important elements in pump performance, and they are diagrammed graphically on a Performance Curve. A system curve must be developed, with calculated heads based on a range of flows; then the characteristics of the system will be known, the actual conditions under which a pump will operate. When system heads are too great for one pump to overcome, pumps may be placed in series, one after another in the same pipeline. This puts more than one source of pressure into the system, and it increases the head.
