ABSTRACT

Management is a series of activities that promotes the accomplishment of goals. This chapter focuses on controlling, budgeting, reporting, and evaluating activities and examines the management of both the technology and information resources of an organization. Managing the information technology (IT) resources is different from managing the agency's information because information management tasks are not always technology based, for example, the task of training users. Information is the primary resource used in delivering human services. For information to become a fundamental resource and receive the required attention, the information management function must have a separate identity in an organization. Most human service organizations should avoid implementing the latest IT developments. Reliance on one or several people for IT development and implementation presents serious risks for an agency. Application development requires a balancing act between the expertise of external vendors and internal users.
