ABSTRACT

Gametogenesis is the formation of gametes: spermatozoa in males and oocytes in females. This process occurs in gonads, where primordial germ cells undergo meiosis, through which is achieved reduction in the number of chromosomes to haploid (half that in the primordial cell) and random exchange of DNA segments. After their production by meiosis, the gametes undergo further differentiation and alteration in their shape (Fig. 2.1, Table 2.1).
