ABSTRACT

Roberts and Thomas 1 determined the Hildebrand parameter of Klucel MF (Hercules Inc., nominal MS 4.0) at 25°C by several methods. Limiting viscosity number in various strongly hydrogen-bonding solvents ( i δ = 18 to 48 MPa1/2) gave 21.8 MPa1/2; the maximum in a range of mixtures of N,N-dimethylformamide ( i δ = 24.8 MPa1/2) and tetrahydrofuran ( i δ = 20.3 MPa1/2) was 21.9 MPa1/2; the minima in surface tension studies were at 22.3 MPa1/2 (acetone-water systems) and 21.7 MPa1/2 (N,N-dimethylformamide-tetrahydrofuran systems); and the value calculated by the method of Small 2 was 20.9 MPa1/2. The average in moderately and strongly hydrogen-bonding liquids was reported as 21.9 MPa1/2.
