ABSTRACT

Enzymes have been called the “agents of life.” Their function is to serve as catalysts for all biological processes. They are complex proteins and are extremely proficient in promoting the course of reactions. As catalysts, they accelerate chemical reactions, usually at temperatures considerably lower than those normally required for the reaction to proceed. While normal catalytic action implies participation of a factor in a reaction without being consumed, there are some instances where an enzyme apparently is used up in the process.
