ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two basic techniques used in digital mobile radio systems, namely, speech coding and modulation. It introduces the basic principles of linear prediction coding (LPC) and vector quantization. The chapter also examines the LPC fundamentals and the techniques chosen for use in the European and American digital cellular mobile radio systems. It focuses on the techniques chosen to be used in the European and American digital cellular systems and on those techniques more closely related to them. The chapter provides some of the fundamentals of linear prediction, aiming at speech-coding applications. The most popular technique is linear predictive coding, comprising a series of other algorithms using the LPC basic principles. The main appeal of digital communication is that it renders the system more flexible to accommodate technological evolution. Digital technology is rather attractive but requires special attention when radio transmission is involved.
