ABSTRACT

Product emission testing is used by manufacturers for product information and by environmental professionals for "predicting product emission contributions" to indoor air environments. Although the ultimate concern is product emissions (frequently referred to as off-gassing) in new or renovated office environments after installation, a more practical approach is required testing prior to any significant purchases. Testing is performed by some manufacturers for quality control. Products which frequently receive considerable attention are particleboard and carpeting. Some environmental professionals address product emissions prior to construction and purchase of furnishings. Toxicological testing which is based on environmental chamber technology and animal inhalation studies is performed to address sensory irritation caused by airborne chemicals. In Germany, environmental labeling focuses on the environmental acceptability of indoor products, based on chemical emissions and other environmental concerns. A "Blue Angel" emissions criteria is provided for copiers and laser printers.
