ABSTRACT

All analyses must be performed by environmental protection agency (EPA) or department of environmental protection (DEP) approved methods. These methods are specified according to the sample matrices. If there is no EPA or DEP method for a specified component, it is possible to use other sources to establish the method. Sources of such methods are: Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, Methods for Determination of Inorganic Substances in Water and Fluvial Sediments and Official Methods of Analysis of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Before applying any method that is different from the approved method, it should be reviewed and accepted by DEP. Permission, issued by the regulatory agency, should be available for acception. The groups for environmental sample matrices are identified as: drinking water, surface water, groundwater, wastewater effluents, soils and sediments, domestic and industrial sludges, solid and hazardous wastes.
