ABSTRACT

The combination of resources available to Florida first produced a pattern of nature and Indian culture directly and indirectly based on renewable solar energy. This chapter presents an overview of the Florida state system and the way it works. It summarizes the basis for Florida's environment and economy. People from outside Florida have a mental picture of what the state is like, such as oranges, warm temperatures, beaches, green wetlands, fishing, the space program, Disney World, and other theme parks. These mental pictures constitute the state's image, which influences people to visit or immigrate to Florida. Characteristics of the Florida system may be compared with other states and nations to help understand Florida's part in the world economy. When a dollar circulates between Florida and another country as part of trade or investing, the benefit to Florida depends on the energy/money ratios. The economy of Florida is dependent on fossil fuels.
