ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the risks associated with client/server implementation and some strategies that can control the risks. Site preparation and installation may not be topics that spring immediately to mind as primary components of netcentric and client/server computing. If an organization is implementing client/server applications at hundreds or thousands of sites, such as occurs with food franchise operations, the sheer problem of managing all that effort may make a general contractor an important part of delivering a quality solution. The site assessment and site preparation plan are provided to contractors who will work during the site preparation phase. The site preparation phase begins as contracts are completed based on the site preparation plan. Contractors are lined up and the sites begin upgrades for the applications. The preparation of sites for client/server computing tends to be an underestimated and understaffed effort.
