ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the aspect of transferring data, information, or power from one part of equipment to another. These issues are of particular interest to diagnostic systems, where a number of modules may be mounted in one system; however, the principles are relevant to any system that involves cabling of one type or another, even if it is only a short ribbon from one board to another or a single cable to the outside world. If we are connecting modules together in a system, we recommend mounting them on a "ground plane," and then routing interconnecting wiring close to this plane to minimize unwanted "loop areas." A typical system will include a number of modules in the enclosure; perhaps a CRT, a printer, and other modules, interconnecting cables, and external cables. All modules must be connected to ground plane, either directly or via a short ground strap.
