ABSTRACT

The cell wall that surrounds plant cells is an insoluble entity that includes an aqueous environment that permeates the wall which contains many soluble proteins and ions. The walls surrounding growing cells (primary walls) are made predominandy of polysaccharides and often some structural proteins. Secondary walls surround cells that have stopped growing and have differentiated and often contain, polysaccharides and proteins, together with lignin and extra amounts of cellulose. Specialized cell walls can also contain other additional polymers.
