It’s not a matter of the background activity involved, but the honesty and integrity of the people who are part of the activity. Our best protection against the dissemination of boldfaced numerical lies and the damage they may cause is to have an appropriate system of checks and balances.
Boldfaced numerical lies usually arise from a desire to further a “worthy” cause or simple self-interest.
