ABSTRACT

After one layer of the fiber preform is satisfactorily impregnated and compacted, another layer is placed on top and the procedure is repeated until the desired lamination of the composite is complete. Although this process was one of the first techniques to be used in manufacturing composites, it is still widely used by the boat manufacturing industry due to its versatility and low capital investment. However, as the resin that is widely used in this open molding process contains styrene (which is emitted to the environment), there is a push to replace it with closed mold processes due to environmental concerns.
