ABSTRACT
Sterility, or freedom from the presence of viable microorganisms, is a strict, uncompromising requirement of an injectable dosage form. Unlike interal administration, parenteral (Greek, para enteron beside the intestine) administration of drugs avoids many of the natural protective defenses of the body. The injection of a product contaminated with living microorganisms would invite a multitude of complications to a potentially immunocompromised patient.
