ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we will study the fundamental ways mass can be transferred. Figure 10.1 shows how the contents of this chapter relate to other chapters on the subject of
mass transfer. We study the processes of molecular and capillary diffusion, dispersion, and bulk flow or convection. Of these processes, diffusion and dispersion can be formulated the same way and are treated together. These two processes together are also the subject of later chapters. Hydraulic or Darcy flow in a porous media is introduced in this chapter as a description for bulk flow through such media.
