ABSTRACT

In thin-layer chromatography, the mobile phase is often called the solvent system, developing solvent, or, simply, the solvent. It has been recommended (Robards et al., 1994) that these terms should not be used interchangeably because the solvent (the liquid in the developing chamber) differs in composition from the mobile phase actually passing through the layer during development. However, this distinction in terms will not be made in this book.
