ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, JNDs were defined in the context of detection. Unlike artifactual attributes, which degrade quality when detected, preferential attributes are essentially always visible, and there is a range of preferred degrees of the attribute depending upon observer and scene. It is, therefore, clear that the term “noticeable” in just noticeable difference is not appropriate for application to preferential attributes. This observation raises the question whether the results of the previous chapter may even be applied to preferential attributes.
