ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, we saw that establishing a standard numerical scale of image quality that is tied to physical standards provides many advantages. Yet, the existence of a numerical scale and an associated physical standard does not solve the problem of how to perform experiments in such a manner that their results are calibrated to the standard scale. There are a variety of psychometric techniques available for assessing a series of samples and expressing the results on some type of rating scale, but none of these are fully satisfactory for producing assessments that are calibrated to a standardized scale.
