ABSTRACT

Section 10.4 described our usual method for quantifying variability in observer sensitivity and scene susceptibility, which involves specification of different IHIF fit parameters for different subgroups of observers and scenes. This permits selection of quality loss functions that are appropriate for particular applications. For example, in setting specifications for a critical professional application, the IHIF fit parameters for a subgroup of more sensitive observers and more susceptible scenes might be employed. It is also possible to statistically sample from the sets of fit parameters in Monte Carlo analyses so that scene and observer variability are reflected in performance modeling (which will be discussed in Ch. 28).
