ABSTRACT
An important objective of intellectual property law is to provide a reliable framework of rules, so that important commercial decisions about investments in research may be made with a degree of certainty about how the products of the research will be protected. In keeping with this requirement for predictability, intellectual property laws are typically drafted in general terms and applied to new technologies on the basis of established principles.
