Genetic Engineering of Beet and the Concept of the Plant as a Factory

Sugar beet is one of the 13 species of Beta (Chenopodiaceae). Like all other cultivated beets, sugar beet belongs to the species Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris. Cultivated beets are derived most probably from an ancestral maritime population (Beta vulgaris spp. maritima)(1).
