ABSTRACT
Visualization has always been central to advancing knowledge, because it supplies the most explicit kind of model: the light microscope revealed the cell, the electron microscope exposed the organelle, and with X-ray crystallography we have penetrated the realm of molecules, which has opened up to direct view the mechanisms of proteins and nucleic acids in all living processes, from metabolism to signaling and to transcription, expression, and heredity.
