ABSTRACT
What should a manufacturing information system do? This is not a trivial question. Stating that it should schedule the factory, compute material requirements, or create a master schedule is not enough to answer the question. The system may need to accomplish these tasks, but if these are the criteria by which the system is designed, it will probably be subject to major flaws. To really understand what an information system should do requires careful consideration.
