ABSTRACT

In this chapter, fundamentals of electro-mechanical systems, electromagnetism, electric machines, and utilization of electric machines to drive mechanical loads are presented.

3.1 Electro-Mechanical Power Transfer Systems

Electric machines can be utilized in either the motoring mode or the generating mode of operation. In the motoring mode, these machines use electricity to drive mechanical loads, while, in the generating mode, they are used to generate electricity from mechanical prime movers. Figures 3.1 and 3.2 show typical graphical representations of the operating modes of electric machines. Figures 3.1 and 3.2 are depicted for a threephase supply source, but it is also possible to have a single-phase or DC supply source. In the next sections, we will examine the basic operating principles, characteristics, and driving equations for these machines. With the use of advanced power electronic tools, it is possible to achieve desired characteristics out of simple electric machines.
