ABSTRACT
The Central American region is prone to earthquake phenomena and geological hazards that affect the environment, structures and life. The subduction of the Cocos plate under the Caribbean plate results in a great release of seismic energy, being the cause of the majority of seismicity. Historical reports show that strong earthquakes occur frequently, the most recent events being the El Salvador earthquakes of January 13 and February 13, 2001.
