ABSTRACT
The tsunami of 26 December 2004 in the Indian Ocean is by far the most destructive tsunami ever in historical time and indeed one of the worst natural disasters in human history. This one single tsunami killed more people than all the Pacific Ocean Tsunamis combined for the 19th and 20th centuries. This is extraordinary, considering the fact that tsunamis are rare in the Indian Ocean, while they occur frequently in the Pacific Ocean.
