ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we discussed how the coordinates and times of events are transformed from one inertial reference frame to another. In practice one is often interested in how other quantities, such as the velocity, momentum and energy of a particle, change if one changes one’s standard of rest; that is, if one transforms from one inertial reference frame to another moving relative to it. In this chapter the relativistic velocity transformations will be derived and some of their applications will be discussed. It will be assumed throughout this chapter that the inertial reference frame ∑′ moves with uniform velocity υ relative to ∑ along their common x axis and that the origins of ∑ and ∑′ coincide at t = t′ = 0.
