ABSTRACT

Organizations requiring rapid and reliable access to data maintained by several databases should consider installing a federated database system. A federated database system is a special type of distributed database management system (DDBMS) that does not have the overhead nor all of the functions of a full-featured DDBMS. A variety of tools, including database drivers, driver managers, and World Wide Web (or Web) publishing tools, are available to construct federated databases. A full-featured DDBMS also can be used to construct a federated database system.
