ABSTRACT

The primary difference between system administration in UNIX compared to Windows NT is in the end-user interface. Windows NT uses the graphical user interface, while the command line (character-based interface) is used heavily in UNIX. UNIX shells and Windows command prompts are discussed in Chapter 37. There are some system administration functions in some UNIX systems using the X-Windows-based graphical interface. However, the X-Windows is an add-on that may or may not be used, unlike Windows NT where the primary means of user interface is the Windows GUI.
