ABSTRACT

Although many definitions of a DDBMS have been given, there is no standard definition. This chapter uses the definition of a DDBMS given by Ceri and Pelagatti:

Exhibit 1 illustrates a DDBMS. In this system, the nodes are connected through a communications subsystem. This subsystem could be a LAN or a long-haul network. Each node has its own local database management system (DBMS), which is capable of handling local applications. In addition, each node is also involved in at least one global application.
