ABSTRACT

The most obvious limitation of the system is that Terminal Services is slicing the base server system’s resources into multiple desktop sessions. The Microsoft Terminal Service implementation also has the ability to set up a gateway to direct the remote connection to a slave desktop workstation. A notable progression was the addition of several new features when Terminal Services changed its name to Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). It should certainly be noted that Microsoft’s remote computing strategy is closely tied to the ability to share one’s desktop session information over an RDP, which has increased functionality and security capabilities as Microsoft has released new versions of their desktop operating system. The icing on the cake is that since all the heavy lifting is being done on the server, the human interface load on the network is reduced to the point at which the remote connection can be run on almost any platform.
