ABSTRACT

While “the edge” has primarily become used to refer to “internet of things” (IoT) style devices, those that sit at the very edge of a business to gather data via sensors, etc., in this chapter author uses “edge” to refer to a variety of edge systems. Equally, protection storage within a core datacenter might be procured and provisioned more cost-effectively, but be insufficient to provide local recoverability services at the edge. While the data protection services for the production and disaster recovery datacenters are expected to be robust and comprehensive, there is less chance of comprehensive data protection services in the smaller offices; usually (though not guaranteed of course), as the number of users and amount of compute services in the remote sites tend to decrease. Businesses deploying IoT systems need to evaluate what the potential impacts to their data protection strategy is or else they are likely to expose themselves to a variety of legal risks.
