ABSTRACT

Data protection is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple information disciplines, including storage, backup, and recovery, and systems and application administration, just to name a few. In order to have a true data protection strategy, a business needs to focus holistically on both proactive and reactive activities, and these activities must be considered synergistically rather than individually. Merging storage and backup processes is often seen as the key approach to developing an effective data protection strategy. A common mistake, even in the data protection industry, is to classify data protection as non-production. As secondary production activities, however, it’s critical that data protection does not unduly interfere with the actual work the company needs to do. The importance of developing holistic data protection strategies rather than independent storage and backup/recovery strategies is simple: combined, they synergistically offer a better solution than any one strategy might in isolation.
