ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors provide some examples of multi-layered data protection approaches based on specific environments. While these are specific examples, they will provide a common baseline to the decision processes and techniques that often go into planning holistic data protection strategies. One of the best examples of a multi-layered data protection approach comes from large NAS storage. These systems have always been large, but with the growth of scale-out storage fueling the prevalence of multi-petabyte systems. While businesses may try to keep storage, virtualization, and backup administration as distinct roles, administrators in all three areas must liaise closely and regularly to ensure compatible, holistic data protection strategies are developed and implemented, and these techniques do not leave gaps that expose the business to risk. Equally, a holistic approach reduces the number of costly overlapping functions; systems planned in isolation may needlessly duplicate functionality or protection at a direct fiscal cost to the business.
