ABSTRACT
Substances can exist in either an amorphous or crystalline state. In the amorphous state, elementary particles are intermixed in a disorderly manner; their positions are not fixed relative to those of their neighbors. In the crystalline state, this substance consists of atoms, or more properly ions, which are arranged according to a regular geometric pattern that can vary from one substance to another.
