ABSTRACT

Unicellular glandsare single cells that secrete product directly from the cell. The product may affect adjacent cells (paracrine signaling) or may be transported some distance away from the secretory cell.

An example of a unicellular gland is the goblet cell which produces mucus. Goblet cells are scattered between other epithelial cells in many locations throughout the body.

Multicellular glands contain multiple secretory cells. The functional cells of the gland are known as parenchyma while the supporting connective tissue is stroma. Multicellular glands range from small sweat glands to large organs such as the pancreas.
