ABSTRACT

A plasma is a hot, fully ionized gas which may be regarded as a collection of positive ions and negative electrons interacting through their mutual electric and magnetic fields (E and B). The fields are related to the charge and current density (ρ and j) by Maxwell’s equations. In vacuum we have () div B = 0 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780367806934/9bfb0311-b831-4b83-80eb-0abe20a9fe57/content/eq1366.tif"/> () c u r l B = μ 0 j + 1 c 2 ∂ E ∂ t https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780367806934/9bfb0311-b831-4b83-80eb-0abe20a9fe57/content/eq1367.tif"/> () div   E = ρ / ϵ 0 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780367806934/9bfb0311-b831-4b83-80eb-0abe20a9fe57/content/eq1368.tif"/> () curl   E = − ∂ B ∂ t https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780367806934/9bfb0311-b831-4b83-80eb-0abe20a9fe57/content/eq1369.tif"/>
