ABSTRACT

In the preceding chapters we have dealt primarily with the OSCE as applied to undergraduate nurse practitioner preparation. However, nurse practitioner educational preparation is increasingly being offered on a postgraduate basis, most often as postgraduate diplomas or master’s degrees, or occasionally as discrete stand-alone modules. A question arises as to how these courses should be differentiated from an undergraduate nurse practitioner course, not only by virtue of the higher academic attainment expected to be demonstrated by these students, but also in the nature of their assessment of advanced practice skills competence. This chapter presents a case study of the innovative modification of the OSCE process at London South Bank University to assess students’ progress in the clinical component of the MSc Nurse Practitioner degree. While this modified OSCE process was developed at London South Bank University, we view this process as being readily transferable to other universities involved in assessing advanced practice competence at master’s level.
