ABSTRACT

Evaluative environments can be decreed to consist of a few homogeneous phases of specified dimensions with constant temperature and composition. “Level I” calculations are the simplest multimedia environmental calculations possible. Unlike with the progression from Level I to Level III, the level of complexity of a Level IV calculation depends to a great extent on the number of compartments that are considered. Level III computations are appropriate for environmental modeling situations where the fugacity in each compartment cannot be assumed to be equal. A variety of flow vectors are possible, including dry and wet atmospheric deposition, soil runoff, sedimentation, etc., and multiple direct emissions to individual compartments are also possible. Multimedia calculations involve the determination of concentrations and flow rates of a given chemical into and out of a system, as well as between compartments within a system.
