ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a process that consists of a combination of components, some of which are conventional (within robust smoothing), others of which are either modified or more precisely specified. Even with a simple process, it is not safe to rely on hand work, so we need to code for a machine. The most novel element is ‘3R 3pR’ — more specifically ‘3R 3pR E2’ — where the components are defined. 3R is a generalization, analogous for: running ties of length two or more, once formed, are not further disturbed (but may be extended); values not part of a running tie of length two are adjusted to replacement by the median of the next previous value, the one concerned, and the next subsequent value; end values are carried on; and all this is repeated to (approximate) convergence.
