ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the difference between managers and supervisors. It shows that managers are also supervisors and that everything which applies to the supervisor also applies to the manager, but at a higher level. The chapter establishes the role of the supervisor, the need for supervision, the art and techniques of supervision and management, the problems of the new supervisor, the techniques used to establish goals and make decisions, and provides some details of how a supervisor is chosen. The effective manager is a successful leader who has the ability to get others to carry out a variety of tasks in a positive manner because they want to do it. There are four different types of leadership styles: Directive leadership; supportive leadership; participative leadership; and achievement oriented leadership. The leader, who of course is the manager, arrives at decisions in a variety of ways and then attempts to implement them.
