ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the different sources of pollution and the resulting effects. Fossil fuels are used as examples of pollution sources and the types of sources are defined as industrial stationary emission sources, nonindustrial stationary emission sources, and mobile emissions. Industrial sources of gases are often classified as either point sources or fugitive sources. The composition of process gases is very dependent upon the process, be it coal gas manufacture, gases from coal carbonization or combustion, or numerous process gases produced by a host of manufacturing industries. Liquid fossil fuels are usually given one or more of the names oil, crude oil, petroleum, heavy oil, and each one is capable of producing pollutant materials. The gaseous component that often occurs in reservoirs with petroleum is natural gas. It is usually processed in a petroleum refinery but there are sources of natural gas which occur without the associated presence of petroleum.
