ABSTRACT

Organisations operate within an increasingly volatile environment and are in a state of constant change. This chapter looks at what change is and what it means to people; some of the ways managers can overcome the resistance to change; how to manage change; and how to set goals. It also looks at some of the ways practice managers can expect to be working in the future. To survive and grow organisations must adjust to change, and be alert to the need for it. Practices have already been participating in major organisational change as they prepare to become small businesses operating within a consortium instead of in isolation. Change is organic and dynamic. It involves: innovation, ice-breaking, leadership, vision, strategy, and drivers. A healthy organisation openly discusses conflict, and accepts that conflict is a normal, and inevitable, reality of management and organisational behaviour. Healthy practices will be organic—always moving, changing and adapting to circumstances.
