ABSTRACT

In a hole lived a hobbit... In fantasy, and at the heart of the universe of the most famous roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons, the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien is essential. And it incontestably was for the first text-based game in video game history, which was created by William Crowther in 1976. As he himself states in Genesis II, Creation and Recreation with Computers, by Dale Peterson, published in 1983, William Crowther played Dungeons and Dragons and also explored caves; it's not a far stretch to say that this predestined him, joyfully enough, to write subterranean adventures.
