ABSTRACT

The chapter deals with a series of practical guidelines for the performance of slug tests. Equipment used for slug tests can be grouped into the general categories of devices for initiating a test, devices for measuring head changes during a test, and devices for storing the head measurements. The equipment used for measuring head changes during a slug test primarily consists of devices that measure the depth to water from a surface datum or the pressure exerted by the overlying column of water. The electric tape is commonly used for measurement of water levels during slug tests in formations of low-to-moderate hydraulic conductivity. The most common type of pressure transducer used for slug tests is the semiconductor strain-gauge transducer. The most common method for initiating a slug test is to rapidly introduce/remove a solid object to/from the water column. The expected and measured values of the initial displacement should be reported for all slug tests, preferably as a ratio.
