ABSTRACT

There are many aspects of veterinary caregiving that are unique to the profession. However, there is an abundance of caregiving concerns from the human caregiving realms that have been researched, discussed, and supported that can be directly translated to the experiences of veterinary caregivers. In this chapter, these common caregiving concerns are identified and discussed: rumination, emotional labor, compassion fatigue, empathic distress, burnout, moral injury, and ethical conflict. With increased awareness and understanding of these terms, the conversation can now move toward how these caregiving concerns manifest in the veterinary profession and what issues and challenges are unique to veterinary medicine as a global practice.
