ABSTRACT

This chapter goes to the heart of the book’s intention to more deeply explore what it is to be a veterinary professional in today’s world. The path of veterinary professional development and the impacts of challenging personality traits, communication, and professional culture are examined to better assess historical precedent and opportunities for healthier choices. The larger systemic social, financial, and caregiving concerns that can impact one’s mental, physical, and emotional health are examined in more detail through the lens of veterinarians, technicians, managers, students, and teachers. Raising awareness around these challenging issues, as well as having a more robust conversation around the subject of trauma and trauma-informed care, is intended to prepare the shift from the current high concern for veterinary professionals suffering personally and professionally to a mindset of how to support thriving individuals and teams.
