ABSTRACT

This chapter only relates to electric bicycles, not electric scooters/hoverboards/or personal transporters of the Segway type. The use of these is illegal on the public roads and pavements of the UK and many other countries. The use of mobility scooters is regulated by a different set of rules. The rules relating to the use of electric bicycles varies between both countries and types of bicycle. Looking at the UK for example, user can ride an electric bicycle in England, Scotland and Wales, if the user are more than 14 years old and it meets certain requirements. The electric bicycles are defined as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles—EAPC in the UK Government rules. The construction of the current range of electric bicycles is based on the construction of conventional, non-electric bicycles with the addition of three main components and a control switch/display panel.
