ABSTRACT

Oropharyngeal cancers are a very serious public health problem due to their increased incidence, prevalence, and mortality. Tumors of oropharynx account for more than two lakhs nineteen thousand deaths worldwide and approximately 90% of the tumors are Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The majority of these tumor-diagnosed patients found having a habit history of alcohol consumption and smoking, which are the most common and important etiologic factors. Further, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been associated with development of these oropharyngeal cancers. Five-year survival rates of oral and oropharyngeal cancer are approximately 50% since most of these tumors are present very late, thereby compromising the treatment, prognosis, and survival of patients. This chapter highlights the Tumor Node Metastasis(TNM) staging of all the subsites of oropharynx, their surgical resection, and adjuvant therapy based on NCCN guidelines.
